Nursing Homes in the United States

In the United States, nursing homes are licensed by states and may also be certified for Medicare or Medicaid. Certification is not the same as a recommendation, and a provider’s participation, services, ownership, staffing, inspections, penalties, and availability can change.

Use the directory to build a shortlist, then compare each listing with Medicare Care Compare and the relevant state survey, licensing, long-term-care ombudsman, and Medicaid resources. Ask the facility which services are included in its quoted rate and which are billed separately.

What to verify

  • Request the current admission agreement and an itemized estimate before committing.
  • Check whether the clinical team can meet present needs and foreseeable changes.
  • Review recent official findings, plans of correction, and complaint information rather than relying on a single score.
  • Discuss Medicare skilled-care limits, Medicaid eligibility, private payment, insurance, and discharge planning with qualified local advisers.
