Paying for Long-Term Care in Canada

A province-and-territory-aware overview of assessment, placement, public subsidies, accommodation charges, optional costs, benefits, and written decisions.

This guide is general education, not medical, legal, financial, insurance, eligibility, or placement advice. Processes and rules change, so confirm them with the responsible authority and qualified advisers.

Begin with the responsible jurisdiction

Provincial and territorial systems determine assessment, placement, subsidies, standardized accommodation charges, income testing, wait lists, and appeal routes. Health authorities or regional services may administer the process. Use the current official guidance for the person’s jurisdiction.

Separate covered care from personal charges

Ask which nursing and personal-care services are publicly funded, which accommodation amount the resident pays, and which room upgrades, supplies, transport, therapies, medicines, telephone, personal items, or other services cost extra. Get optional-service consent and cancellation terms in writing.

Check assistance and income effects

Reduced rates, income-tested subsidies, tax credits, disability or veterans’ benefits, private insurance, and protections for a spouse or dependant vary. Ask how income is calculated, which documents are required, when rates are reviewed, and whether a decision can be reconsidered or appealed.

Plan with current advice

Contact the provincial or territorial ministry, health authority, placement service, seniors’ advocate or ombudsman, insurer, and qualified legal or financial advisers. Request an itemized provider agreement and official eligibility decision. Do not transfer assets or sign guarantees solely on informal advice.
