Questions to Ask on a Care Home Visit

A visit checklist covering care assessment, staffing, daily life, safety, medicines, complaints, costs, contracts, and transitions.

This guide is general education, not medical, legal, financial, insurance, eligibility, or placement advice. Processes and rules change, so confirm them with the responsible authority and qualified advisers.

Care and staffing

  • Who completes the pre-admission assessment, and what needs cannot the home safely support?
  • Who is on duty by day and overnight, how are agency staff used, and how are staff trained for the care offered?
  • How are clinicians, therapy, dentistry, pharmacy, and emergency services accessed?

Daily life and rights

  • How are routines, food, activities, faith, language, relationships, privacy, and community connections personalized?
  • How can residents make choices, access fresh air, receive visitors, keep possessions, and raise a concern without retaliation?
  • How does the home communicate with authorized family or representatives while protecting confidentiality?

Safety and quality

  • How are medicines, falls, pressure injuries, nutrition, infection, missing-person risks, restraint, safeguarding, and emergencies managed and reviewed?
  • What changed after the latest inspection, complaint, incident review, or resident feedback?
  • Can you see the current licence or registration details and the full official report?

Costs and transitions

  • What is included in writing, which extras are optional or needs-based, and when can prices change?
  • What are the deposit, cancellation, notice, refund, absence, discharge, and room-change rules?
  • What happens if funding is delayed, needs increase, a resident enters hospital, or the home can no longer provide care?
